Macbeth – Play by Tamasha Entertainment

Macbeth is perhaps among the most enacted plays by Shakespeare.  It has been translated in myriad languages and performed across the globe, such is the legacy. Given the popularity, it is a tall order to attempt such a popular piece. To this end, Tamasha Entertainment and Rajul Khare’s  production Macbeth is clearly a bold enterprise. Directed by K Madavane, the play is a translation in Hindi.

First and foremost, what impressed us was the long queues before Shri Ram Centre, the venue.  The audience, motley set comprising men and women; young and old waited patiently for entry. We are glad that Tamasha Entertainment has made a name for itself in Delhi theatre circuit.

The stage was very abstract. White and red curtains divided a space in a nonfigurative manner. The costumes of the protagonists were all in muted shades. But they wore white face paint punctuated with red. This very histrionic touch set the tone for the evening. After all what’s a Shakespeare without some drama?

The Hindi script, in line with any Shakespearean work, was heavy. Kudos to the actors for articulating those difficult lines while maintaining the pitch of Shakespearean lines. The actors  assaying Macbeth and as Lady Macbeth were total pros. Macbeth’s dilemma effortlessly touched us. But Lady Macbeth stole the show. The wily, ambitious yet eccentric nature of this character was aptly conveyed.  The production needs some moderation though. For instance the character Banquo was barely audible.

The high point of this production is the mood. The director captured the right spirit of this oft-watched number. Given that the prodcution is a very different language and a very different culture, it is a huge feat. This was our take home from the play. Needless to say it is an immensely watchable production and they are having shows throughout October.  If you want to watch something nice this season, go ahead and watch Tamasha’s Macbeth.
