6 restaurants that closed down and left us heartbroken

Jan 18, 2016 | Food

Delhi is a true melting pot when it comes to restaurants and cafes. The city offers an incredible variety of cuisines, catering to all budgets and preferences. For over 18 years, we’ve been exploring and documenting our culinary adventures across Delhi on this blog. However, some of our favorite spots have sadly shut down, leaving us heartbroken. While a few have relocated, others have closed their doors for good. Here’s a list of restaurants that we dearly miss and wish were still around.
Fruto-Freesh-01

Fruto Freesh

Once our go-to place for Tuesday vegetarian dinners, this Green Park restaurant had everything going for it. Clean white modern interiors, great staff, and healthy vegetarian dishes like no oil, brown burger and low fat gelatos for deserts. They never had any dearth of dinners given their delicious food and reasonable pricing. We used to recommend this place to our family and friends and rated it really high. We wonder what went wrong that they changed their menu to a photostat copy, reduced the number of items to half, increased the prices and eventually went out of business. Terribly sad.

Aap ki Khaatir

Once famous for its Kakori Kebab Rolls this little no-dining-space-eat-in-your-car-or-take-away eatery at Nizamuddin shut shop as a result of the MCD sealing drive. Their Kakori Kebab Rolls used to melt in the mouth and the Biryani would make our car smell like a classy Mughlai restaurant. We heard they opened another branch near SDA market with the same name. We went and ate but we really doubt if it’s the same people. The food is no match to the original outlet.

Gun Powder

Oh, we so wish to go back in time and eat Gun Poder’s toddy fish mean curry with Malabar Parotha one last time. This coastal food restaurant at Hauz Khas Village was always in demand. The memory of balcony seating, the beer and the post-dinner dessert made of jaggery and fresh peaches make us want to time travel and relive the experience. Another great restaurant shuts shop because of not abiding by government norms.

reeve-02

Reeve

Owned and run by Masterchef India 2 winner, Reeve was a little-known gem in Green Park. At Reeve, they created a nice setting for cozy fine dining and served some amazing food. We still remember the attention to detail in their food and decor. And the paan-flavored mouth freshener shots they used to serve with the bill still manage to water our mouths or should we say bring tears to taste buds.

Futomaki

It was a quaint little place in blingy HKV that served some amazing veg and non-veg Sushis. Their Sushi prices were best in Delhi and most of the times they would run out of stock by 5.30 pm. No wonder we could not have their Sushis more than once.

Nirulas Potpourri

Before the invasion of McDonald’s and KFCs, Nirula’s was the only place for middle-class Delhites to have fancy burgers and ice creams that looked like the variety shown in TV commercials (we realised it was called “Sundae” only at Nirulas). Nirulas Potpourri at CP was their buffet place we loved visiting this place for their soup, salad, and dessert buffet. With Citibank’s Buy one Get one discount thrown in, it was a steal deal. Little did we know the place was on the verge of shutting down. Closing down of Nirula’s Potpourri was the end of an era.

Sai Sarover Udupi

This hidden gem was of Delhi was our most favourite spot to relish South Indian Food whenever we would visit Lajpat Nagar. Simple, decent staff and pocket-friendly vegetarian meals make this restaurant our top choice when it came to South Indian food in South Delhi. Alas, the restaurant is closed now and we are heartbroken. We are not sure if they have opened elsewhere yet. We will update here once we know.

Some other restaurants that had potential and good word of mouth, but still shut shop include Sattviko GK, Sakae Sushi Vasant Kunj, Goodricke Teapot Café Gurgaon and.
