Chitrangada is the story of a dancer. The protagonist Rudra Chatterjee (Rituparno Ghosh) always wanted to become a choreographer but studied engineering to fulfill his father’s (Dipankar De) dream. Rudra wants to stage a dance drama Chitrangada on the occasion of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary. In this play Rudra plays the role of Madan, who helps Arjun fall in love with Chitrangada (Raima Sen). Partha (Jishu Sengupta) plays a percussionist who wants to join Rudra’s group. The significance of this play in Rudra’s life is what the films deals with. During the rehearsal, Rudra and Partha slowly get attached to each other. In this process, Rudra and Partho want to adopt a baby. But in India, two men cannot adopt a baby. Rudra considers becoming a woman in order to be able to adopt a baby. This results in a conflict in Rudra on whether he is a man or a woman and he has nervous breakdown.
