Disney’s Aladdin in Delhi

Jul 11, 2018 | Theatre, Things to do in Delhi

The City of Djinns has a different genie visiting these days. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is hosting the Disney production Aladdin in Delhi from 6th July to 15th July. We were fortunate to be able to catch the spectacular show on the opening evening.

It is an adaptation of Disney’s celebrated animation movie Aladdin based on the tale from Thousand and One Arabian Nights. The costumes, the sets, and even the looks of the characters resemble the ones painted by artists for the animated film. The script too is in resonance with the cinematic version. However, to inculcate local flavour, the actors include lines about Delhi culture and Gurgaon traffic and that adds to the experience.

The production in India is directed by Shruti Sharma and features many television and stage actors from Mumbai. The whole show is handled with clockwork precision and nothing goes wrong. Every actor comes and plays their part, no one surpassing the other. However, the sprightly genie manages to capture the heart of the audience. Stage actor and RJ Mantra assays this role with Elan and oomph. This is a way slimmer Genie here then the genie in the Disney movie.

While the production is a must-watch for children, it has enough elements to engage the adult audience as well. It is bilingual – English and Hindi. But we find the shifting of languages a little imposed and distracts us from the script.

While India is opening up to Broadway-style theatre it is still a treat to watch such extravagance sitting in the home country. We therefore welcome Disney’s Aladdin in Delhi and any such grand production that comes our way. Vodafone is one of the partners in this production and we thank them for collaborating with us for the event.
