ऊंबरा: At An Ancestral Threshold – A Solo Exhibition

Gallerie Nvya will present ऊंबरा: at an ancestral threshold, a solo exhibition by emerging contemporary artist Rohit Suresh Varekar, whose practice explores the intersections of memory, migration, ecology, and cultural heritage through materials deeply rooted in place and history.

Inspired by the devastating floods that transformed parts of Maharashtra’s Konkan region in 2021, the exhibition draws upon reclaimed architectural fragments salvaged from collapsed mud homes. Through sculpture, carving, drawing, and assemblage, Varekar reimagines doors, beams, pillars, and other remnants of vernacular architecture as vessels of personal and collective memory, asking what remains when landscapes change and communities move away.

At the heart of the exhibition is a large-scale immersive installation featuring salvaged double-panel doors inscribed with ecological warnings inspired by renowned environmentalist Madhav Gadgil. Through weathered timber, wax-infused drawings, and intricate hand-carved imagery, the artist transforms architectural debris into evocative reflections on environmental change, climate vulnerability, urban migration, and the gradual disappearance of traditional ways of life.

Rather than treating these reclaimed materials as relics of the past, ऊंबरा: at an ancestral threshold positions them as active storytellers, carrying traces of habitation, memory, resilience, and cultural continuity. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between people and place, and the fragile connections that bind architecture, ecology, and identity.
