Aadyam Theatre Presents Sunil Shanbag’s Absurdist Comedy The Horse
Aadyam Theatre, an initiative of the Aditya Birla Group and a leading platform for Indian theatre, concludes its seventh season with The Horse, a bold absurdist comedy directed by award-winning theatre veteran Sunil Shanbag.
Adapted from Hungarian playwright Julius Hay’s The Horse, this musical comedy unfolds in a Roman tavern during the reign of Emperor Caligula. A wild gambling night turns into chaos when an outrageous bet spirals into bizarre events, exposing themes of celebrity culture, ambition, and the collapse of institutions.
Director’s Vision:
Sunil Shanbag, recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, describes the play as a biting satire on authoritarian absurdity and blind sycophancy—issues that remain as timely today as they were decades ago. Known for his experimental, form-breaking theatre, Shanbag returns to Aadyam after his acclaimed works Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, Cotton 56, Polyester 84, and Loretta.

With The Horse, Aadyam Theatre ends the season on a high, continuing its mission to support world-class Indian theatre and storytelling.
