As part of its 35th-anniversary celebrations, Gallery Espace proudly presents Ancestral Futures, an exciting exhibition curated by Swiss curator Damien Christinger. Running from October 19 to December 12, 2024, the exhibition invites viewers to explore how past, present, and future converge through contemporary art practices.
Curated with a vision that intertwines historical and futuristic perspectives, Ancestral Futures brings together works by 13 acclaimed artists from India and around the globe. The exhibition showcases a unique blend of artistic expressions, including installations, lenticular prints, and paper works, all inspired by the theme of ancestral heritage and future possibilities.
Christinger, who draws inspiration from Brazilian thinker Ailton Krenak’s concept of “ancestral futures,” reflects on how our past shapes both present realities and future aspirations. As artists engage with their cultural narratives, they also address pressing contemporary issues like environmental degradation, making the exhibition both intellectually stimulating and visually captivating.
Founder and Director of Gallery Espace, Renu Modi, adds that Ancestral Futures not only commemorates the gallery’s legacy but also highlights its forward-looking approach to contemporary Indian art. With groundbreaking exhibitions like “Video Wednesdays” and a strong advocacy for new media and innovative art forms, Gallery Espace has consistently been ahead of its time.
