Contours of Modernism – Edition II: Indian Modern Art Exhibition at Gallery Pioneer, Delhi

Gallery Pioneer presents Contours of Modernism – Edition II, an exhibition bringing together works by some of the most recognised names in Indian modern art. Opening on 3 October 2026, the exhibition revisits important periods in the development of Indian Modernism through artworks that have spent years in private collections and are now returning to public view.

The exhibition features works by S. H. Raza, F. N. Souza, K. H. Ara, K. S. Kulkarni, G. R. Santosh, Ram Kumar, Manu Parekh, Shuvaprasanna, Thota Vaikuntam, Arup Das, Dhiraj Choudhary and other artists whose practices have contributed to the evolution of modern Indian art.

Beyond the artists and their works, this edition explores the stories that artworks carry after leaving the artist’s studio. Some were acquired directly from artists, while others passed through galleries, exhibitions and auctions before becoming part of private collections. Each journey offers a glimpse into the relationships, personal choices and cultural encounters that shape the life of an artwork.

Among the highlights are an Arup Das work acquired directly from his studio, a K. H. Ara painting chosen by a New Delhi couple at a Saffronart exhibition, and a group of Dhiraj Choudhary’s works collected through Gallery Pioneer in Hauz Khas Village in the early 2000s. The exhibition also presents eight early works attributed to Ram Kumar, with a collection history connecting the artist, writer and translator S. Balu Rao and subsequent generations.

Following the response to its first edition, Contours of Modernism – Edition II invites visitors to look beyond familiar names and market value to consider the histories of collecting, preservation and personal attachment behind the works. It is an opportunity to rediscover Indian Modernism through artworks that continue to hold meaning long after their original acquisition.
