The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is proud to present Eckart Muthesius and Manik Bagh – Pioneering Modernism in India, an exhibition that delves into the architectural and design collaboration between German architect Eckart Muthesius and Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II of Indore. Curated by Raffael Dedo Gadebusch, head of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Berlin, the exhibition marks the beginning of a promising partnership between KNMA and the Asian Art Museum Berlin.
This exhibition, held in honor of Eckart Muthesius’ 120th birth anniversary, revisits the creation of India’s first modernist edifice, Manik Bagh (translated as “jewel garden”). Commissioned by Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II and completed by Muthesius in 1933, Manik Bagh stands as an iconic representation of modern architecture, blending elegant design principles with holistic elements. The palace’s interiors were designed with contemporary masterpieces, including Constantin Brancusi’s celebrated sculpture Bird in Space. This visionary project signified the early days of international modernism and is regarded as one of the most innovative architectural syntheses in Asia.
The exhibition showcases rare, never-before-seen photographs of Manik Bagh, including works by Man Ray, Emil Leitner, and Eckart Muthesius himself. Visitors can explore watercolors, sketches, and design studies by Muthesius, bringing to life the extraordinary collaboration between India and Germany during the 1930s.
This exhibition is a must-visit for architecture, art, and history enthusiasts, offering a rare glimpse into the beginnings of modernism in India and celebrating a fusion of cultures.
