Gulistan – A Solo Art Exhibition

October 22 @ 11:00 am - October 28 @ 5:00 pm

“Gulistan” by Gopa Trivedi is a solo art exhibition showcasing a series of 128 stunning paintings arranged in the Mughal char bagh format. This exhibition explores the intricate relationship between botanical species, hybrid creatures, and colonial history through a contemporary lens. These artworks vividly portray plants brought to India centuries ago via ancient trade routes and colonial influence.

Key Themes of Gopa Trivedi’s “Gulistan”

  • Botanical Exploration: Gopa’s works draw inspiration from the 18th and 19th-century botanical gardens, transforming delicate natural forms into symbolic narratives.
  • Colonial History & Politics: The exhibition delves into how foreign plants and species, once political tools, have become part of India’s cultural and historical landscape.
  • Kampani Kalam Technique: The intricate painting style adds layers of meaning, questioning historical truths and reimagining historical myths.
  • Pliny the Elder’s Influence: A reference to Naturalis Historia, Gopa explores Pliny’s fantastical descriptions of India, which reflect oriental prejudices and othering.

Featured Art Series: Monsters of Our Making

In this captivating series, Gopa Trivedi creates fantastical creatures combining human, plant, and animal forms. These hybrids challenge the notion of truth and fiction, blending reality with imagination in a way that highlights the blurred boundaries between belonging and otherness.
