he Celebration of Gita Mahotsav brings a moral and cultural resurgence among the people. It becomes even more relevant today as we are living in challenging times. The prime objective of celebrating the festival of Gita Jayanti is to enlighten the people with the immortal and intangible heritage of Bhagavadgita- the song celestial.
The Government of Haryana is Celebrating the Gita Mahotsav festival in collaboration with the Kurukshetra Development Board in the city of Kurukshetra Since the year 1989. In the beginning, only religious and cultural programmers were organized by the religious organizations and the Kurukshetra Development Board, but later on, a wide range of social, cultural, and academic programs got incorporated with the festival. On this occasion social organizations organized blood donation camps, dental care, and eye camps, etc. Besides, the marriages of poor youth, the adoption of orphans, and other welfare programs were also organized during the early days of the celebration of the festival.
In the year 2016, the Government of Haryana took a decision to celebrate the festival of Gita Jayanti as International Gita Mahotsav in which more than two million people visited Kurukshetra which in fact proved a milestone in the history of the celebration of Gita Jayanti in Kurukshetra. Again in 2017, 2018, and 2019, the festival of International Gita Mahotsav was organized in Kurukshetra. This year state of Uttarakhand has been selected as a partner state for enhancing the dimensions and popularity of the festival to new heights. About three million people thronged to the holy city of Kurukshetra on this occasion. The participation of International artists and craftsmen in the cultural activities and craft fairs attracted a large number of people to visit Kurukshetra. Exhibitions from different religious and spiritual organizations were also organized on the occasion. Many Indian & foreign scholars participated in the Seminar on the Gita organized by Kurukshetra University. Discourses on the Gita in Sant Sammelan, water laser show at Brahma Sarovar, Mega cultural Evenings, Global Chanting of the Gita by 18000 students, Gita Sobha Yatra, Performances of the artists of the Country, food stalls of different regions of India and huge craft mela are the prime attraction of this festival.
Kurukshetra is well-connected by road. It is about 160 km. from Delhi, 39 km. from Karnal, and 40 km. from Ambala. It is 6 km. from Pipli, an important road junction on National Highway No. 1.
