Often cited as the best cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, this medieval Japan tale begins with generals Washizu and Miki winning an impossible victory. On their way back, they get lost in the jungle surrounding the emperor’s fort. Here a ghost predicts Washizu would become emperor, and Miki’s son would follow him. Later, encouraged by his wife, Washizu plots to make the prophecy come true, even if it means killing the emperor he serves.

Japanese Classics Samurai Series Yojimbo (1961/Japanese with Eng subs/110 mins). Dir. Akira Kurosawa. Sanjuro, a wandering samurai in 19th-century Japan, reaches a town divided by opposing gangs. He decides to rid the village of both by playing one gang against the other. His luck runs out after he frees a woman, and is later discovered by the revolver-wielding Unosuke who slaughters rival gang members and gravely injures Sanjuro. He escapes and recovers in a temple. When his helper, the innkeeper, is captured, Sanjuro must face Unosuke. But would his wit and skill be any match against a revolver?
