Khula Aasman – Solo project by Seema Kohli

Khula Aasman: A Journey Through Memory and Belonging
The second edition of Khula Aasman, a project by renowned artist Seema Kohli, delves into personal and collective memories tied to her ancestral home in Pind Dadan Khan, now in Pakistan’s Jhelum District. Through mixed-media works, including video installations, silver gelatin prints, and large paintings, Kohli weaves a poignant narrative of longing, loss, and belonging.
Highlights include:
- Multichannel Video Installation: A-e-Guzashta (Mirroring the Past) bridges the artist’s present and past homes, reimagining migration and memory.
- Paintings: Yamuna captures her father’s bond with a beloved cow left behind during Partition, while Gulab ke Khet evokes the rose fields of Choa Saidanshah.
- Phulkari Collaboration: A 4×10 feet embroidery, crafted with the Meher Baba Charitable Trust, reimagines the Salt Range landscape.
- Audio and Visual Elements: Family archives, autobiographical excerpts, and tinted photographs breathe life into ancestral spaces and traditions.
Key Themes: Partition, migration, heritage, oral histories, and collective memory.
This exhibition invites visitors to experience an intimate retelling of family histories that transcend borders, evoking nostalgia and a sense of shared humanity.
