META 2026 – Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards

The Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) is widely regarded as one of the most respected recognitions in Indian theatre, setting high standards across every element of stagecraft.

Over the years, the festival 26has showcased plays exploring a wide spectrum of themes—from contemporary social concerns to mythology, religion, gender, caste, politics, and classic literature—reflecting the many voices and stories that shape Indian theatre.

META works to build greater awareness and appreciation for theatre in India and remains the country’s only national platform dedicated to recognising and celebrating outstanding productions and theatre professionals. Each year, more than 400 entries are received, out of which 10 productions are shortlisted to be performed in Delhi during a week-long festival. These plays compete for the prestigious awards presented on the much-anticipated Awards Night, where honours across 13 categories, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award, are announced.

Across two decades, META has brought together theatre artists and productions from every part of the country. Carrying forward this tradition of inclusivity, the 21st edition features shortlisted plays in nine languages—Hindi, English, Bundelkhandi, Hindustani, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Sanskrit, and even Gibberish. The festival will host hundreds of artists and present a vibrant celebration of theatre, highlighting powerful performances, inventive stage design, original writing, and striking costume work.

Established by the Mahindra Group, META has grown far beyond an awards ceremony. Today, it stands as one of the most important platforms celebrating the richness and diversity of Indian theatre.

From script to stage, META acknowledges every dimension of theatrical creativity-honouring playwrights, performers, directors, and designers alike. As it steps into its 21st year, the awards continue their commitment to supporting and amplifying the many voices and talents that keep Indian theatre alive and thriving.

Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) will honour legendary actor, director, and theatre practitioner Amol Palekar with the META Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to Indian theatre and cinema. Over a career spanning several decades, Mr. Palekar has been celebrated for his distinctive artistic voice and his enduring commitment to storytelling across both stage and screen. He will receive the award on 25 March 2026 at the META Awards Night.

META has also announced the distinguished jury for this year, comprising some of the most respected voices in Indian theatre: Amal Allana, Anuradha Kapur, Rajit Kapur, Satish Alekar, and Ila Arun.

The 21st edition of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), instituted by the Mahindra Group and produced by Teamwork Arts, will be held in New Delhi from 19 to 25 March 2026, with performances and events taking place at Kamani Auditorium and Shri Ram Centre.
