Of Land, River, and Body (Mati, Nodi, Deho) – Solo Exhibition
Vadehra Art Gallery presents Of Land, River, and Body (Mati, Nodi, Deho), a solo exhibition by acclaimed Bangladeshi artist Ashfika Rahman, marking her first-ever solo exhibition in India. Winner of the Future Generation Art Prize 2024, Rahman brings an immersive and research-driven body of work that reflects on land, memory, and the lived realities of marginalised communities in South Asia.
The exhibition draws from three of the artist’s ongoing series—Than Para, Files of the Disappeared, and Behula These Days—and includes large-scale installations, photography, and interactive audio-visual works. Moving between art and documentary, Rahman works across photography, textiles, sound, video, text, and installation to examine themes of indigenous violence, land dispossession, enforced disappearances, climate-linked gendered violence, and fear-driven political systems.
Grounded in extensive archival research and long-term engagement with communities in Bangladesh, Rahman’s practice draws from oral histories, mythological references, and folk traditions. Many of the works function as rare or singular testimonies for communities facing erasure, foregrounding urgent questions around human rights, state authority, collective memory, and survival. While rooted in specific local contexts, the exhibition connects these realities to wider global political structures.
