Palimpsest of the Soul: Dipendranath Pal’s Solo Art Exhibition at Triveni Kala Sangam, Delhi
What can ageing walls tell us about memory, time and the lives lived around them? Palimpsest of the Soul, a solo exhibition by Kolkata-based artist Dipendranath Pal, explores these questions through abstract paintings inspired by the weathered architecture of North Kolkata. Curated by Georgina Maddox, the exhibition opens at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, on 15 October 2026.
Pal draws inspiration from the city’s ageing buildings, peeling paint, cracks, faded façades and layered surfaces. Rather than recreating these architectural details literally, he transforms them into visual explorations of memory, decay, endurance and the human experience.
The title refers to a palimpsest, a surface that retains traces of earlier writing beneath newer layers. In Pal’s work, this becomes a metaphor for both the city and the human mind, where personal memories and collective histories continue to exist beneath the surface.
An important aspect of the artist’s practice is his experimentation with materials. Working across paper and canvas, he combines acrylic pigments with impasto, sawdust sourced from neighbourhood sawmills, and tamarind-seed binder traditionally used by artisans, including those associated with Kolkata’s Kumartuli. These materials connect his paintings to the city’s physical environment, traditional craft practices and histories of labour.
The resulting works occupy a space between abstraction and recognition. Textures may evoke a weathered wall, a crack may suggest a scar, and layers of paint can bring to mind memories that have faded but never entirely disappeared.
Through this interplay of architecture, material and emotion, Palimpsest of the Soul invites visitors to look beyond buildings as physical structures and consider how places become repositories of personal and collective memory.
