The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) proudly presents The Elemental You, the first in a series of exhibitions highlighting the practices of South Asian diaspora artists. Curated by Akansha Rastogi, this exhibition features the works of three renowned artists: Simryn Gill, Neha Choksi, and Hajra Waheed. Running from October 15, 2024, to January 9, 2025, the exhibition explores the element “Earth” as a geological, cultural, and material experience, showcasing art that reflects each artist’s deep engagement with nature and the environment.
The Elemental You delves into the long-term projects and life-long commitments of the artists to specific ideas and materials. The exhibition addresses their nuanced politics of being and becoming, their relationship with the natural world, and how they embody and efface the abstraction of existence. The works engage with subjects such as rocks, sand, plants, trees, light, and animals, reflecting on both human and non-human experiences. The exhibition is structured around three conceptual pathways:
These pathways unfold across a slow, immersive experience that takes visitors through time, space, and environmental reflection. Neha Choksi‘s works focus on geological changes. At the same time, Simryn Gill’s documentation of Port Dickson and Hajra Waheed’s exploration of the night sky and Kashmir creates an emotional horizon for the exhibition.
At the heart of The Elemental You is “The Working Space,” featuring special projects by Vijai Maia Patchineelam and Ranjana Dave, alongside an Artists’ Roundtable with rotating interventions. The exhibition is also accompanied by a rich public program that includes field visits, workshops, performances, film screenings, and conversations with artists.
