VIRAASAT 2024: Celebrating the Timeless Beauty of Handwoven Saris in India

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, proudly presents the third edition of the “Viraasat Sari Festival 2024”, a mega celebration of India’s rich handloom sari heritage. Following the massive success of the 2022 and 2023 editions, which welcomed over 20,000 visitors, this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better.

Event Highlights:

  • 80 Stalls featuring handloom weavers and artisans showcasing exquisite handwoven saris and handicrafts.
  • Curated Displays of traditional and contemporary handloom saris from across India.
  • Live Loom Demonstrations: Experience the art of handloom weaving firsthand.
  • Workshops & Talks: Engage with experts on the themes of saris, handloom sustainability, and their cultural significance.
  • Folk Performances: Enjoy vibrant folk dances and music celebrating India’s diverse heritage.
  • Regional Cuisine: Savor traditional dishes from various Indian states.

A Tribute to India’s Handloom Heritage

The event celebrates the timeless art of sari weaving, highlighting iconic handloom varieties such as:

  • Paithani, Pochampally, Kancheepuram, Chanderi, Banarasi Brocade, Maheshwari, Jamdani, Patola, Pashmina, and many more.
  • Each region’s unique weaves, traditional motifs, and intricate craftsmanship will be on display, offering sari enthusiasts an opportunity to witness India’s vibrant textile legacy.

Empowering Handloom Communities

India’s handloom sector employs over 35 lakh artisans, many of whom are women. Events like Viraasat aim to boost awareness, market reach, and incomes for handloom weavers and artisans by creating a direct connection between creators and buyers.

The Government of India continues to promote handloom products through initiatives like “Zero Defect, Zero Effect”, which emphasizes quality and eco-friendly production. Buyers can shop with confidence, knowing they are purchasing authentic, hand-woven masterpieces.
