Virasat: Mahesh Elkunchwar’s Play Comes to Sunder Nursery

August 24 @ 7:00 PM - August 27 @ 9:00 PM

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents Virasat, a hyperrealist staging of celebrated Marathi playwright Mahesh Elkunchwar’s acclaimed Wada trilogy, directed by Anuradha Kapur.

The production will be presented as a single performance at Sunder Nursery from 24 to 27 September 2026, following previews at Black Box Okhla.

Moving away from the conventional proscenium stage, Virasat adopts an arena format that places audiences within the architecture of the performance itself. The production explores what Anuradha Kapur describes as a “hyperrealist score of action”, where everyday activities unfold in real time. This approach blurs the boundary between theatrical representation and lived experience, allowing audiences to inhabit time alongside the performers rather than simply watch from a distance.

Commissioned by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and developed in residence at Black Box Okhla, Virasat is a generational saga centred on the Deshpande family of Dharangaon against the backdrop of a rapidly changing India. Through the story of a once prosperous feudal household, Mahesh Elkunchwar examines the social changes that gradually reshape the lives of a family and its world.
