We recently watched this latest offering by Disney – Pixar in Hindi. My oh my – what fun it was! Well you don’t expect anything less from the studios that gave us Finding Nemo and Inside Out . The film is like a roller coaster ride on a submarine where forgetful Dory is lost in the big bad sea and is trying to find her parents.

Finding Dory in Hindi was double the fun for so many reasons:

1.It’s not like a dubbed version of another language film. So you don’t get the feeling of watching a South Indian film dubbed in Hindi like Indra the Tiger or even Bahubali. It feels like it was originally made in Hindi.

2. The Hindi words used are simple to follow. Not weird like “Rakt Phool” in the Hindi version of The Jungle Book

3. Not just voice over but the written words in the movie, e.g., the name of places or departments in the marine hospital are also written in Hindi. Could Disney be any smarter?

4. The Punjabi or Bengali accent of the fishes is cute as hell. You just can’t resist having a smile on your face throughout the 100 minutes duration of the movie.

5. When forgetful Dori tells Hank (the Octopus) again and again that she is suffering from memory loss, Hank replies “Haan Haan maloom hai…GAJNI waali bimari” we just salute the dialog writers and the effort to make it connect with Hindi speaking audience. Don’t know what is the parallel dialog in English but it can’t be as apt as this.

6. The local language is not forced. In the climax they have used the legendary song “What a wonderful world” by Louis Armstrong in its original English version and it’s so perfect in that scene. This English song in a Hindi movie just doesn’t seem out of place. There can’t be a better song for the moment when fishes are getting liberated from aquarium and jumping into this big sea, even by accident.

7. Above all, one doesn’t need to read the subtitles along with the movie as in most of the cinema halls they have subtitles with English films. Even if you are comfortable with the language the text comes in your way of enjoying what’s going on the screen and you end up reading occasionally.

Regardless of what language you watch this film, it’s a must watch. Though the novelty of the concept of a lost fish is gone with Finding Nemo and it’s tough to match up to the original,  Finding Dory one is a great watch for kids, adults, Hindi speaking, English speaking, everybody….humans or fishes  🙂
