Affordable Vegetarian Dining at Gulab Wala

From Gajak Rewari to Quick Service Restaurants

Till a few years back, Gulab Wala was a name frequently heard in Delhi winters for their Gajak Rewari. They took these humble sweets from Punjab and made them fancy by adding desi ghee, creating varieties and flavors unheard of for Gajak Rewari, and packaging them in bright, gift-worthy fancy boxes.

Expanding into Quick Service Restaurants

Soon after, they entered into QSR (quick service vegetarian restaurants) in Delhi NCR. Though not as famous as Haldiram-Bikanerwalas, they are doing decent business in Delhi and Gurgaon. We recently discovered why.

Our Visit After Sharbat and Ayurveda Mela 2016

After attending Sharbat and Ayurveda Mela 2016 at Dilli Haat Pitam Pura, we were looking for a place to have a vegetarian lunch. Since the mela offered no decent option for lunch, we decided to go to a nearby restaurant. We avoided NSP due to the bad parking situation and overall weekend chaos. On an extremely hot summer day, Gulab Wala was an easy choice as it is a 5-minute drive from Dilli Haat Pitam Pura.

The Decor and Ambiance

The decor inside Gulab Wala gives the feeling of a huge gift gallery with all sorts of bright, glittery golden boxes all around. Even the overall decor is golden and, to be frank, tacky. They have kept a few (6-7) tables in the pathway for diners. It’s a self-service place, but once you have chosen and paid for the items, you can hand over the bill to the waiter, and he serves on the table. This was a big relief and the major reason we were happy about choosing Gulab Wala.

The Menu: Affordable and Delicious

We ordered Kachori Alu, Choley Bhature, and Shahi Paneer with butter naan.

  • Kachori Alu: For just 40-45 bucks, it was the cheapest and best in taste. Spicy, tangy, and fresh, this alu sabzi was finger-licking good.
  • Choley Bhature: These were just about alright. We’ve had much better.
  • Shahi Paneer and Naan: Nice and simple.
  • Faluda Kulfi: The kulfi was mildly sweet and was not heavy with thick rabri or dry fruits. We like our desserts like this.

Conclusion: A Pleasant Surprise

We had no expectations before going, but it turned out to be a good, pocket-friendly restaurant. We recommend Gulab Wala in Pitam Pura for vegetarians looking for a quick and affordable place to have Indian snacks and sweets.
