Many state bhawan canteens/restaurants provide simple home style food for guests lodging at the state bhawan as well as outsiders. In search of simple basic “ghar jaisa khana” on a vegetarian day, we landed at Rajasthan Bhawan. It’s located on Prithvi Raj Road near Khan Market and has ample parking inside.

We reached a little before 8 pm and the dining area had just one table occupied. We were told that it will take around half an hour for dinner to get ready. We didn’t mind since the place was quiet and it was still early for dinner. In fact the peace and quite gave us some time to catch up and blog.

The food arrived one hour after we came. It was a vegetarian thali with tawa roti, soya chunks in spinach gravy, pumpkin curry, moong dal and salad. We were famished and attacked the food like there was no tomorrow.

Every dish was freshly prepared and very basic. No frills at all. Apart from the chillies which were much higher than home-cooked food, it felt absolutely like home food. We loved the thin and piping hot tawa roti and had quite a few, given the unlimited servings. They also had rice, which we skipped. The thali was served with the dessert – sewaiyaan kheer. It was as good as rest of the fare.

Rajasthan food is known to be spicy. If one can get over the mirchi, this is a perfect pocket friendly, simple week evening dinner.

What to expect at Rajasthan Bhawan Delhi Canteen

The menu at State Bhawan canteens is rather limited. Rajasthan House Delhi canteen menu is no exception. What they lack in variety, they compensate in quality, simplicity and affordability. You can have a wholesome meal here without having to worry about the standard of food or burning a hole in your pocket. And that is no mean thing in the heart of Delhi where finding affordable food could be an issue.

Daal Baati Churma in Delhi

Daal Baati Churma is served during lunch on special occasions

A standard dinner platter comprises daal, 2 varieties of vegetables, curd or raita, salad, rice roti and kheer for dessert. And we saw a sweet dish being served as well, we jumped in delight. They serve dal-bati-churma during lunch and on special occasions. The fare is indeed like Rajasthani home food in Delhi. It is something that we can have regularly without falling sick.
