Venue: Shri Ram Centre
Date: 8 May 2015
Today is the 154th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. To commemorate this occasion various programs are held in Delhi.
Uttarayan, a cultural organization promoting the works of Tagore held a musical soiree to observe this event on 8th May. The program punctually started on the dot at 7 p.m. During the next one and half hours, around nineteen songs and five pieces of prose/poetry in Bangla, all composed by Tagore, were presented by a team of thirty performers. There was no gap between the numbers and the recital flowed freely. The songs were a combination of solo as well as group renditions and touched the right chords with the listeners. In fact, many in the audience, eyes shut, hummed along.
The simple stage with a painted background of cascading floral motifs in the alpona style, looked sober but aesthetic.
The program was over at 8:30 and no time was wasted in elaborating about the bios of Uttarayan or the greatness of Tagore. In fact Sanjay Sarkar, the director of Uttarayan, did not give any speeches / intro. They let the performance speak for itself.
They are also a part of the Rabindra Jayanti celebrations at Chittaranjan Park Kali Mandir, 7 p.m. this evening (9th May).
