Mcleodganj Food Trail is incomplete without visiting this cafe

Dec 24, 2018 | Eating out, Food, Travel

Date: 28 Nov 2018
Venue: Mcleodganj, Dharamshala

We always look for reasons to travel to Dharmashala. This time it was the Trigart Art Festival.  We had a group of blogger friends with us and we were looking for breakfast options in Dharamshala. It was raining that morning and most places were shut. We opted for cafes in Mcleodganj and thankfully, Mama’s Kitchen was opening. We have been here before and brought our friends along.

Mama’s Kitchen is run by this Tibetan lady, with lovely long braid, and her sons. They also call themselves J.J. in Exile. Smallish place, only couple of tables, but great vibes. The sunlight poured in from the windows and gave a surreal setting. A lazy dog, and we meet him here every time, added to the ambience. Everybody forgot about food but started clicking.

We finally ordered a Farmer’s Breakfast Omelet, Honey Ginger Lemon tea and our all-time fav brown spinach momos, vegetable momos (they don’t serve non-vegetarian momos here). They make the momos from scratch after you order and alert you it is going to take time.  But when the momos were served – we saw it was well worth the wait. The momo shell was wheat and not white flour. The filling, i.e., spinach mixed with cottage cheese had still retained the crunch. It was sheer heaven in the mouth. The vegetable momos were also full of crunchy goodness and not what we get in Delhi. The omelet was filling and works as a meal on its own. They also sell some home bakery and the unique cookies were tasty too. The tea was mild – just the right amount of sweetness with sour. And the lovely orange color of this drink made it look like elixir.

Carried away? May be a bit. The relaxed laidback attitude, warm hospitability of the folks here, not to mention the great food, make this place a must visit. In fact, we recommend to JJI’s Exile Brother’s Cafe Mama’s Kitchen to anybody who asks us about where to eat in Mcleodganj. Just try it out yourselves and you will know what we are saying.

There’s two things I love: travelling and food. All of these dishes look yummy and Dharmashala is now on my wander list.

The food looks good! Nothing quite like travel and good food. It’s great to hear you found a good vegetarian place. Especially for breakfast.
