Nautanki Saala

Rohan Sippy’s latest “Nautanki Saala” is a new age entertainer based on a French film “Apres Vous” (They gave the movie credits in opening titles). We have neither seen Rohan’s earlier work “Bluff Master” & “Dum Maro Dum” nor the French film but Nautanki Saala was surely impressive and left us with a smile on our faces.

The storyline is far from a typical bollywood potboiler and minus any formula RomComs keep using again and again. Male Star cast consist of Ayushman Khurana and Kunal Roy Kapoor . All the female cast were new faces apart from “Gaelyn Mendonca” whom we remember as an MTV VJ. For newcomers their acting skills were alright.

Ayushman Khurana has already proved his mettle as an actor in Vicky Donor and has continued his winning spree in Nautanki Saala. In fact this time he had it much more difficult than Vicky Donor. There aren’t any twists n turns in the storyline and neither is a fantastic supporting cast like Annu Kapoor or Dolly Ahluwalia like in his previous film. Moreover the film’s slow pace made it an uphill task for him to keep the audience engaged. Still he managed to sail through beautifully. Kunal Roy Kapoor was also as good as his previous film “Delhi Belly”. His comic timing was right. He essayed the character of a failed, resigned and cynical lover who tried to commit suicide but saved by a stranger. In the second half when the savior end up breaking his heart, Kunal walked away with audiences’ sympathy without being melodramatic or loud. Kudos to both – the actor and the director.

Songs are easy on ears and never came in the way of enjoying the movie. “Dil Ki To Lag Gayi”is going to be playing in our cars for a couple of weeks for sure. Quite melodious this song has a relaxing club/lounge feeling.

The stage/theatre portions looked great. The Ashok Vatika tree, Sita’s agnee pareeksha and Hanuman flying looked great and were well executed.

Nautanki Saala is not parallel cinema for sure. Neither is this your mainstream film where people flock to cinema halls with wives and kids in tow. The film doesn’t guarantee lot of whistles or claps in the hall. It’s a feel good film made for audience with some gray matter and patience. Definitely not for “Dabangg” or “Rowdy Rathore” loving audience. They might leave the theatre much before the intermission. We definitely need more films like this and we look forward to Rohan and Anyushman’s future work.
