Verbum, The English Dramatics Society, Sri Venkateswara College recently staged the English play – Speed the Plow. We watched it on a week evening at Little Theater Group. Since it was a play by a college theater group, well we went we didn’t have very high expectations. Also they started 40 minutes late and it added to this notion.

The play is about two friends in film production business who are planning to churn out a money grosser and has approached an actor with enormous mass appeal. In comes a secretary with a different view point and her own hidden agendas and that changes things between the friends. The remaining play is about making the audience look back and examine their own lives. Their dreams, their agendas and the day to day compromises they make. We realised that in our daily struggle we put our dreams at stake to make ends meet.

The actors were decent and with time and more polish we hope they would shine even better. For instance – it’s a verbose play in English and perhaps taking the title a little too seriously the actors spoke very fast. This can be an issue with the common Delhi audience. Next time please go a bit slow guys!

The play climax, by a turn of events is most interesting. Writing more would be a spoiler. We’ll end by saying that our low expectations were proved wrong and we were glad that we watched this play.

P.S. Speed the Plow that puts the plot at crossroads between money and morals, deserves to be a part of Bharat Rang Mahotsav.
