Dreamz – Sehar A play by Pankaj Kapur

Thespian Pankaj Kapur has planned a selection of plays on dreams and the first in this series, Dreamz Sehar, was recently staged at Siri Fort, New Delhi. The theme had us all excited and we had to watch Sehar. But we were not alone in our dream journey. Serpentine queues at the Siri Fort entry that evening proved that we had enough co-passengers sharing our aspirations.

Across the Sea – Puppet Play at Theatre Olympics

NSD’s Theatre Olympics is a melange of plays in all possible genres – from comedy to tragedy – from nouveau experiments to traditional nautanki – from song and dance based musicals to non verbal plays. We managed to watch a multitude of styles in this theatre extravaganza this year. “Across the sea”, directed by Anurupa Roy was probably the first puppet play we watched in this festival. Puppets are a great story-telling medium and we welcome the inclusion of this genre in this annual theatre bonanza.

Elephant in the Room – Ganesha as we don’t know him – META 2017

Mahendra Excellence Theatre Awards (META) this year had a host of mind-numbing beautiful plays and the jury would have had a very tough time in selecting the winners. A particularly interesting piece was ‘Elephant in the Room’ a soliloquy created out of an interesting topic. It is a quirky twist to the familiar story of Ganesha’s losing his head due to his father’s wrath and having an elephant head attached instead!

Outcaste – META plays 2017

Outcaste – META plays 2017

OUTCASTE was a unique play in Hindi by Randhir Kumar in this year’s META. It represented a traditional genre of Indian theatre that was activist in nature. It involved a huge number of artists who ruled the stage with clockwork precision.

Sir Sir Sarla – Play by Zee Theatre

Sir Sir Sarla – Play by Zee Theatre

Zee TV’s theatre wing Zee Theater was back with its second presentation “Sir Sir Sarla”, a play written and directed by Makrand Deshpande. The 2 hours 15 minutes play was a most off beat production that cannot be identified in the common classifications of theater that we ordinarily get to see in Delhi. We look forward to their next production in March 2017.
