Talaash

Talaash-Amir-Rani-Kareena

I raise my glass to this one. An almost screwed up Sunday (Delhi road jams because of weddings, Endless waiting at Gurgaon toll, flat tire…..) was saved because of late night show of Talaash. Brilliant entertainer this one.

Very well directed and executed by Reema Kagti. Quality cinema without cheap dialogues, item numbers or any kind of vulgarity. The film has a great story line and is very well edited. The film is very crisp and fast paced without a single dull moment. I caught myself at the edge of my seat most of the time.

All the major characters in the film looked nice and acted very well.

Rani Mukherjee – sans any makeup looked smashing in the film. Quoting Gabbar Singh from Sholay “Yeh Kolkata wale apni chokariyon ko kaun chakki ka atta khilate hain? All the voluptuous oomph she created in recently released Aiyaa is still in place. She is like an old wine. Getting better and better everyday… I’m yet to get over her fantastic performance in Aiyaa and she took a complete U-Turn and delivered a sterling performance as Inspector’s wife who’s coming to terms with loss of her only son. She underplayed her character beautifully. At her age and experience, she doesn’t need too many dialogues, song-dances or melodrama to leave an impact.

And Respect for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He brought the character of Tehmur to life effortlessly. He out shown almost everybody in a film, full of big stars and some very well known artists in supporting cast.

Amir Khan, though stuck with a single expression throughout the film created justice to his role as an Inspector, trying to solve the murder of a big film star. He’s looking extremely fit and handsome sporting mustache. He managed to bring alive the pain of a father who’s mourning the loss of his son.

Kareena Kapoor can never be impressive or convincing as a call girl. I didn’t like her as a prostitute in Chameli (Ya I know she bagged a national award for that but it didn’t work for me. I’ll go with Chandni Bar’s Tabu any day when it comes to playing such roles)… She’s not bad in the film but still something missing. Couldn’t evoke the sympathy that her role demanded. I think she overdid the seductress part.

The underwater scene where Kareena Kapoor opens the car door to free Amir Khan was superb. She paved the way for the Inspector to set himself free from the guilt of his son’s death. We’ve seen something similar in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hritik and Katrina – Underwater with soft instrumental music in background ) and we don’t mind watching it again in a completely different context here. It was very artistic and very symbolic. Shows the brilliant direction skills of the director Reema Kagti and writer Zoya Akhtar.

I also liked the sequence where Amir is recalling the sequence of events on the day when his son died. He’s recreating the alternative situations thinking how he could have saved his son from dying. He could have played checkerboard or could have gone with him to the lake…. Don’t we all wish to go back in past and make amends with what happened in the past… – Very well directed.

They possibly can’t create better music for a film with very little scope for songs. “Jiya laage na” is possibly the best song of the movie. Difficult to believe it’s the same Sona Mohapatra who crooned “Aaja we” a few years back. I loved that song and I love this one… She should sing more. She’s quite versatile. “Jee Le Zaraa” was also very melodious and “Hona Hai Kya” was situational and made the Tehmur’s chase sequence fast paced and interesting. None of the songs slow down the film or were forced into the story.

Overall a great film. Highly recommended (even if you know the twist in the story). I knew about the spoiler before going for the movie, but still enjoyed every bit of it.
