Tihar Haat – Handmade stuff by Tihar Jail inmates

Jul 21, 2017 | Food, Handicraft, Things to do in Delhi

Venue:
Jail Road, Janakpuri
Date: 2nd July

Did you know Tihar Jail is the largest prison complex in South Asia? Therefore, it’s no surprise that this place is a hub of activities. And if one crosses that area, Tihar Haat is visible on the main road.

Tihar Haat is a store that sells products created by the inmates of Tihar Prison. The items include food products such as biscuits, savouries, sauces and pickles; cleaning liquids, clothes, costume ornaments and paintings. The simplistic paintings and handicrafts make one aware about a host of talents that we have in us – and that are wasted. They also have a furniture shop that carries goods like stools and day beds woven with colourful strings. Some of them look distinctively designer.

All the items here have a strong Indian feel. Moreover, the food products are great quality and reasonably priced. The goods produced in Tihar Jail are also available at India International Trade Fair as well as various exhibitions in and around Delhi NCR.

The shady nook has a calming effect on the visitors. They also have a food court but that is for another day.

Tihar Jail is now a correctional institution with the aim to convert its inmates into productive members of society by imparting useful skills, education to them. No wonder, this now is now called Tihar Ashram. Tihar Haat is a great initiative in this direction we say!

Interesting how they are trying to convert their inmates into productive citizens. In America, prisoners make license plates & that’s about it!
