Unique Singaporean Café With A Heartwarming Story In Kolkata

Jul 24, 2025 | Food

We found a place in Kolkata that’s not just about good food – it’s about giving people a second chance at life. It’s a café that serves a purpose with every plate. Located on Hindustan Road near Triangular Park, iDelight Café is Kolkata’s first Singaporean café – and it comes with a powerful story. Run as a social enterprise, iDelight Café supports survivors of human trafficking by offering them employment, training, and dignity. Yes, this is where our coffee helps create change. We recently visited iDelight and were blown away by the calm vibe, unique Singaporean dishes, and the inspiring journey behind it all.

Where Purpose Meets Peace

iDelight Café is prominently located on Hindustan Road, bang opposite Triangular Park. Being one of the busiest shopping areas of Kolkata, it is almost at the centre of enormous hustle and bustle. But once you walk in, it’s like stepping into another world.

Minimal décor, a two-floor layout, soft lighting, and a warm welcome – this café is the perfect break from the bustle of South Kolkata. Whether you want to work remotely, meet friends, or enjoy a quiet solo meal, this is your spot. There’s seating on both floors, and the upstairs area is especially peaceful. Shaded by the canopies of old trees, this space is a great place to unwind or even host a small get-together.

Singaporean Food in Kolkata – A Fresh Flavour Trail

The iDelight Café menu offers authentic Singaporean dishes, many of which are hard to find elsewhere in India, let alone Kolkata.

We began with the classic combo of Singaporean coffee and kaya toast. The coffee was rich and slightly sweet, just the way it’s made in kopitiams across Singapore. The kaya toast – with coconut jam and butter – hit the nostalgia note instantly.

Next came the chicken meat loaf, pan-seared to golden perfection. It was juicy, mildly spiced, and tasted just like homemade comfort food.

The star of our meal, though, was the Char Siew with springy noodles. The smoky glazed chicken slices were paired with delicate handmade noodles and a bowl of clear wanton soup. It was balanced, flavourful, and presented beautifully.

We also tried the Chicken Rendang with rice – a full-bodied dish rich in spices and coconut flavours. For those who love robust gravies, Singapore Curry Chicken is a must-try. The aroma alone had us sold. It was creamy, comforting, and packed with depth.

To round off the savouries, we sampled the Char Siew Bao. Think soft, fluffy steamed buns with a delicious filling of sweet-and-smoky meat. A street-food classic that was made to perfection here.

Desserts from the East

Singaporean desserts are not too sweet, and that’s what makes them so enjoyable. At iDelight, we had two unique options.

Onde Onde – chewy green rice balls filled with molten palm sugar – were little flavour bombs. Each bite offered a soft texture with a sweet surprise in the centre. And then came the Pandan Cake – soft, airy, and lightly fragrant. It was the perfect way to end a rich meal on a refreshing note.

Meet the Woman Behind iDelight Café

While the food is a reason to visit, the power behind iDelight Café is its founder, Josephine Tan. A passionate home chef and social entrepreneur, Josephine started iDelight with a mission – to empower survivors of human trafficking by giving them vocational skills and meaningful employment. Her belief: good food can heal, restore, and provide dignity. Every dish here is made with care, and every employee is part of a larger journey toward self-reliance.

Incidentally, Josephine’s activities are not limited to F&B. She has also started an initiative, Touch Nature, with her rescued team, and they produce and sell handmade candles, soap, and toiletries online as well as at a special counter in the café. We were impressed that this wasn’t just a café. It was a movement.
