This is an English film based on a Bengali short story by Sunil Gangopadhyay. It is the tale of a devdasi’s daughter (Shahana Goswami) in a South Indian village who gets impregnated by a sculptor of a low caste.
The story had potential. However, all content gets diluted in the over emphasis on cinematography. The details are boring and the dark shade and the back shots of all actors make the film divert from the story line. The director seems confused as to whether this is a period drama or the contemporary era. Geeta Chandran, the noted Bharatnatyam dancer plays the role of the devadasi, but given the weak direction, fails to leave an impression.
Overridden with conceptual as well as pictorial clichés, the film appears to be an insincere effort, the only goal being to woe international award forums.
