Wengers Connaught Place – Sweet dreams are made of this

Aug 2, 2018 | Eating out, Food

Venue: Connaught Place

Now there is one place at CP that sells out before 7 pm. And whenever you go before that, it’s crowded.  The place oozes attitude and yet – it is indispensible. We are talking about Wenger’s at Connaught Place.

While we see a lot of colonial influence in Delhi architecture, somehow the bakery tradition hasn’t survived. We do get a fair share from Flury’s or Nahoum in Kolkata. But it would be great to have a option closer home.

Wenger’s fills this void. They are in business for 75 years we are told and have a very British design entry gate. And not all British era stuff is bad. Take their cream buns. The buns are soft and the cream inside is mild, fluffy and lightly flavoured. It melts in the mouth and messes one up a bit around the lips and on fingers. But it is all so worth it and we just don’t mind.

Their whole cakes are also delightful. The sponge cake is soft while the icing is fluffy. The fresh fruit cake is our favourite. We love how they cover the sides with chopped cashew. The whole thing comes together so well in each bite. The chocolate, mocha and black forest cakes are also great. These make lovely dessert options post heavy dinner.

Wenger’s also has savouries. We love their chicken sandwich.  It is fresh with lot of mayonnaise. That apart they have patties, croissants, meat balls and perhaps small pizzas too.  Cookies and rusk are also available.

But then, it’s their desserts and confectionery that drive us nuts. They are entitled to all their attitude if we may say so. If you haven’t tried Wenger’s yet – it’s like a food crime – just go. Meanwhile, all this writing has made us hungry and we are heading to Wenger’s for some éclairs and lemon tart.
