India is the land of magic they say. But what is magic actually? We got an opportunity to mull on this question at an event when famed German magician and mentalist Nicolai Friedrich performed at the Orana Conventions, India Culture Centre in Gurgaon.
It was a spacious hall full of eager audience when Friedrich opened house. Most of his acts involved a lot of audience volunteers who were randomly selected from the house. While the magician in him showed the age-old card tricks, floating solid objects as well as bending a spoon with his vision or generating money noted out of nowhere. The mentalist in him played with the minds of the audience in making guesses which were exact or very close to what the audience had in mind. He also demonstrated a mental connect between a husband and wife so much so that when Friedrich tickled the husband, the blindfolded wife felt the sensation.
We were dumbstruck as to how Friedrich was achieving the impossible. He gave out the secret. In his own words, “Every magic trick is based upon science“. He said that the trick was to believe in the impossible. If somebody believed he could do a task, he should put his mind to it and that as per Friedrich was magic. Extremely empowering and quite a high degree of positive thinking we say.
So this was one show that entertained as well as prompted us to think hard and positively. Mentalist Nicolai Freidrich gets a bow from us.
