You can’t afford to miss this International Theatre Festival in Delhi

Feb 13, 2019 | Plays, Theatre

Date: 01- 21 February, 2019
Venue: NSD, Kamani Auditorium, LTG Auditorium, Shriram center of arts

It’s that time of the year that we wait with baited breath. Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM) – The International Theatre Festival of India is being held from 01- 21 February 2019 at the auditoriums of National School of Drama (NSD) as well as Kamani, Shriram and LTG Auditoriums. It’s a unique opportunity to watch several plays by renowned directors, actors and theatre groups from India and overseas. Celebrity directors from Bollywood and eminent theatre personalities from abroad are also a part of this theatre extravaganza.

Along with traditional and contemporary plays, the festival has included folk theatre and classical plays as well in their latest edition of this Theatre Festival. A host of talks, workshops, live performances are part of BRM 2019.

We are trying to watch an array of plays covering various flavors. Some of the plays we have watched till now are “Harishchannar Ki Ladai” – in Hindi, “Three Sisters” – an English play from Nepal, and “Vacant Lot” – an NSD repertoire production. “Mathemagician” , a solo play was exceptionally good. We may watch Gauhar again as it’s part of BRM2019.

Given that Bharat Rang Mahotsav is happening at a host of venues that includes non NSD venues, we would highly recommend you visit NSD at least once. NSD gate and the lawns are transformed into one big “play zone” with hanging lights, arty make shift furniture, frescoes and sculpture.

If you are here for plays, and feel hungry you can always go to Food Bazaar, the food court at NSD. Even if you’re watching the plays at Kamani, Shriram or LTG, NSD is a stone’s throw away. The food court has various stalls for South Indian, Chinese, Healthfood and desserts. Special mentions are the two parantha stalls that serve home-style stuffed vegetarian parathas with raita and pickle.

Also take a round of the Theatre Bazaar which is setup to engage the visitors. There are stalls selling hand painted T-shirts, bags, crystal ware, handicraft, Warli paintings and what not.

Move towards the lawns of NSD and you’ll see a beautiful photo exhibition well lit with colored lights and interesting frames.

Come half an hour before the play time and you can enjoy live folk dance and music performances outside the venues.

Winters in Delhi are on their way out, giving way to a much pleasant and festive whether. If you have been sitting on the fence about trying out theatre, this is the time to cross over. Not only would you get to see great theatre, but also the festive mood at NSD, we bet, would lift your spirits.

Tickets are available online at Bookmyshow and NSD counters. Ticket price ranges from Rs.100/- to Rs.400/-.

India always has such beautiful, vibrant, and colorful festivals! I have a friend who has traveled there twice recently and has really enjoyed her time there! I’m not sure which part of India she was in, but she had wonderful things to say about her travels!
