Many state bhawan canteens/restaurants provide simple home style food for guests lodging at the state bhawan as well as outsiders. In search of simple basic “ghar jaisa khana” on a vegetarian day, we landed at Rajasthan Bhawan. It’s located on Prithvi Raj Road near Khan Market and has ample parking inside.
We reached a little before 8 pm and the dining area had just one table occupied. We were told that it will take around half an hour for dinner to get ready. We didn’t mind since the place was quiet and it was still early for dinner. In fact the peace and quite gave us some time to catch up and blog.
The food arrived one hour after we came. It was a vegetarian thali with tawa roti, soya chunks in spinach gravy, pumpkin curry, moong dal and salad. We were famished and attacked the food like there was no tomorrow.
Every dish was freshly prepared and very basic. No frills at all. Apart from the chillies which were much higher than home cooked food, it felt absolutely like home food. We loved the thin and piping hot tawa roti and had quite a few, given the unlimited servings. They also had rice, which we skipped. The thali was served with the dessert – sewaiyaan kheer. It was as good as rest of the fare.
Rajasthan food is known to be spicy. If one can get over the mirchi, this is a perfect pocket friendly, simple week evening dinner.
