Best Of Dharamshala: Hotels, Offbeat And Popular Things To Do

Jun 30, 2025 | Travel

Dharamshala, tucked away in the Dhauladhar range of Himachal Pradesh, is one of those hill stations that offer much more than just cool weather. Paired with the neighbouring town of McLeodganj, it gives travellers the best of both worlds-spiritual calm, Tibetan culture, mountain treks, cafes, and a bustling local vibe. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or a scenic escape with loads of things to explore, this region ticks all the boxes.

How We Reached Dharamshala

We travelled from Delhi to Dharamshala in just 7.5 hours, skipping the traditional overnight bus this time. We took the Vande Bharat from Delhi to Amb Andaura and then completed the journey with a car transfer arranged by our hotel. The route was smooth and made the trip feel more relaxing.

The Dharamshala Skywalk Experience (Ropeway Ride)

Once in Dharamshala, we skipped the usual traffic and took the Skywalk ropeway scenic cable car ride that connects Dharamshala to McLeodganj. The gondola glides smoothly over pine-covered hills and valleys, offering aerial views that are worth capturing. It’s a fast, fun, and efficient way to get to the heart of McLeodganj.

Where to Stay in McLeodganj: Our Experience at WelcomeHeritage Natraj

We stayed at WelcomeHeritage Natraj McLeodganj, and the location alone makes it one of the best hotels near major attractions in Dharamshala. It’s right on the main McLeodganj road, so everything from the Dalai Lama Temple to the local market is within easy reach.

The hotel offers clean, spacious, and luxurious rooms with a strong AC – a rare treat in hill stations. Bathrooms are spotless, and the staff is warm and welcoming. They even have a small but neat swimming pool, perfect if you’re visiting in the warmer months.

Dining here was a highlight. Nirvana, the hotel’s multi-cuisine restaurant, offers a wide array of local Himachali dishes along with popular international flavours. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty Indian thali or something continental, Nirvana’s menu caters to all kinds of palates.

Evenings at Mountain High, the rooftop bar, were something special. With panoramic views of the Dhauladhar ranges, this spot is perfect for relaxing with handcrafted cocktails and premium beverages. One night, we enjoyed live music over cocktails-the perfect blend of great weather, good vibes, and chilled drinks.

Things to Do in Dharamshala & McLeodganj

Naddi View Point

Dharamshala

Just a short drive from McLeodganj, Naddi View Point offers stunning panoramic views of the Dhauladhar mountain range. This place is perfect for catching snow-clad peaks as well as sunsets. During our visit, it started raining, which only added to the charm-mist rolling in, clouds hanging low, and a magical mountain vibe all around. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for both photography and quiet reflection.

St. John in the Wilderness Church

This historic Anglican church is located in the middle of a forested area, surrounded by tall deodar trees. The church looked surreal with its neo-Gothic architecture and Belgian stained-glass windows. The rain and fresh smell from the forest transformed the church into a beautiful sight for sore city eyes. The cool, moss-covered structure and the surrounding silence give the whole area a hauntingly beautiful feel.

McLeodganj Market

The heart of McLeodganj is its bustling market, a great place for shopping, street food, and people-watching. Here, you’ll find Tibetan souvenirs, prayer wheels, woollen clothes, jewellery, and handicrafts. The market is lively during evenings, and you can spend hours exploring the lanes, sipping butter tea, and chatting with local vendors.

We tried Siddhu – The local steamed Himachali stuffed bread while strolling the McLeodganj market.

Himalayan Brew Tea Plantation

A peaceful morning walk through the tea plantations at Himalayan Brew was one of the highlights of our trip. Located slightly away from the main town, the estate offers a firsthand look at tea picking and processing. Great spot for beautiful selfies as well as for tea lovers and those looking to learn more about local agriculture. From a small stall at the plantation site, you can buy the tea boxes as well.

HPCA Cricket Stadium

The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium is one of the most scenic stadiums in the world. With the Dhauladhar mountains forming the backdrop, it’s a must-visit even if you’re not into cricket. The colours of the Tibetan-style gate against the dramatic landscape make it a photographer’s delight. There was a practice session going on and that made the experience even better.

State War Memorial

Located in the pine-scented Dhauladhar foothills, the State War Memorial honours the brave soldiers of Himachal Pradesh. The memorial features a beautiful yet subtle structure, fountains, plaques, and an eternal flame. It’s a serene place to pay your respects and reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed forces. The small landscaped park around the memorial is ideal for a quiet stroll.

Dalai Lama Temple

The Dalai Lama temple is the official residence of the 14th Dalai Lama. The atmosphere is tranquil, with monks in prayer, devotees spinning prayer wheels, and soft chanting in the background. The temple complex includes a museum, library, and a bookstore. It’s a peaceful place to spend some time learning about Tibetan Buddhism. From the balcony, you can see the Skyway Gondola moving past, surrounded by misty clouds.

We spotted these diyas in the evening, which added to the divine vibes of the temple.

Bhagsu Waterfall and Temple

PIN IT FOR LATER READ

One of the most popular spots in McLeodganj, Bhagsu Waterfall is an easy trek from the town and worth every step. The water cascades down a rocky slope, and there’s a small pool where people often dip their feet. Just before the waterfall is the ancient Bhagsunath Temple, which adds spiritual energy to the area. There are cafes on the way, making the walk even more pleasant.

Norbulingka Institute

Norbulingka Institute is a beautifully maintained Tibetan cultural centre that aims to preserve Tibetan art and heritage. The campus includes traditional architecture, serene gardens, a Tibetan temple, and artisan workshops where you can see thangka painting, wood carving, and more. There’s also a charming doll museum depicting Tibetan life and traditions. This is one place where you can spend hours and not feel the time pass.

Kharota View Point

Kharota is one of those lesser-known gems that offer breathtaking views minus the crowd. The trek up to the viewpoint is moderate and surrounded by greenery. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the valley below and the mountains beyond. It’s a peaceful, offbeat spot for nature lovers and those seeking some quiet.

We spotted these uber cute and docile goats and lambs going about their daily routine.

I’ve never been to Dharamshala, but this gave me a better sense of what it’s actually like. I like that you included both quiet spots and the more popular places—it feels more balanced and doable. The tea walk and that simple viewpoint sound like things I’d actually enjoy. Definitely saving this for when I finally plan a trip.

We loved both Dharamshala and McLeodgang, though it tends to get crowded. especially over the weekends. The vibes are truly infectious. One of the places that we found nice was St John’s in The Wood church, which has such a tranquil ambience. Would love to get back there.
