Zaika-E-Dilli – Celebrating Delhi Street Food

We visited the daylong street food festival Zaika-E-Dilli at Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri where the organisers Thelewala brought together brought an assortment of street food mostly from Old Delhi. Consequently, got to have some simple but hidden pleasures like the fruit kuliey and the Rabri waali Kulfi in Rose flavour. The Diwali Bazar organised at Blind School is back. The designers of Delhi and surrounding regions have assembled with their fare ranging from clothes, accessories, home décor items and food. Additionally, the Blind School stall carries a variety of candles, paper items such as pads, cards, gift tags and bags, all made by the inmates. The parking arrangements are much better this year since cars may be parked at Sunheri Bag, off Lodhi Road, that is close by.

We attended a piano concert by Anil Srinivasan at Habitat. The pieces that he played were a combination of Western Classical to Carnatic to popular Bollywood numbers. “Touch” was the theme of the evening and accompanying the performance were audio visuals that depicted experiences that had touched the artist.

Festival of Lights – Dastkar Diwali Mela

Festival of Lights – Dastkar Diwali Mela

We attended the Festival of Lights, a quaint Diwali Mela organized by Dastakar prior to the festival. Along with their regular crafts based items – clothes and ornaments, home accessories, ceramics, they had lamps and Diwali motif décor items. Additionally, a group of Rajasthani singers and dancers provided a welcome relief to the dazed shoppers as well as their disinterested escorts who had been forced to accompany them.

Bursting the Crackers

Bursting the Crackers

Many amongst us suffer from this big “should we” “shouldn’t we” dilemma in terms of Diwali firecrackers. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has recently cleared its stance – no ban on bursting crackers, do it but within the rules. We say – go for it if you wish- in moderation and with sensitivity.

The Potbelly – Bihari cuisine beyond Litti Chokha

The Potbelly is a restaurant serving Bihari cuisine in their outlets at Shahpur Jat and Bihar Bhavan in Chanakyapuri. The Chanakyapuri outlet opens out to a lawn and greets one with pleasant artistic décor. They take Bihari cuisine out of the litti-chokha zone and the stylised cooking alongwith the aesthetic plating makes a visit to this place a fine dining experience . But without burning a hole in one’s pocket.

B Bar: Pan Asian Cuisine in Saket

B Bar at Select Citywalk mall, Saket, serve Asian food from Japanese, Chinese, Malay to Thai cuisine. It is an impressive looking place and the food is nice. We were particularly impressed with Maki Rolls and prawn dimsums. It may be a little over-the-top for regular meals but is apt for celebrations.

Durga Puja is around the corner (19th – 22nd October, 2015) and parks / open spaces in NCR are dressing up for hosting the Goddess Durga and her children these five days. This festival in its present form is commonly a public celebration that involves craft, music, food, new clothes and the sound of dhak (the Bengali drum). People hop between various pandals to enjoy the festivities. Chittaranjan Park has the highest concentration of Pujas in NCR. The celebration supersedes the religious character and thus this festival is open to all.

Unfreedom-Telling people what they don’t want to hear

Unfreedom-Telling people what they don’t want to hear

Un-freedom deals with lives of few people – some demanding freedom from society, some struggling to set themselves free from their past and some rejecting the idea of freedom from taboos. The film is a bold attempt in creating something new using the tried and tested theme of homosexuality and post 9/11 trauma. Unfreedom is very well scripted & directed and editing is also praiseworthy.

QD’s Restaurant – Another Campus Favourite

QD’s Restaurant at South Campus is a popular food joint. Their most celebrated dish perhaps is the tandoori momos. These are grilled dumplings with chicken / vegetable filling. The filling is spicy and the dish should be had hot. Try this if you are up for experimenting with food.
