After trying a number of new restaurants in CP (Farzi cafe, MTV Flyp, Oh my God), Gurgaon (Warehouse cafe, California Boulevard), DLF Cyberhub (Burma Burma, Italiano) and Rajori (Junkyard cafe, Habibi), looks like Shahpur Jat is coming up as a new food hub in Delhi NCR. Though make no mistake, this food hub is not about usual restaurants that are opening up with just new themes and same old dishes. This hub is all about experiments. Be it a fashion store cum vegan/vegetarian Cospace cafe like Greenr or our new found home delivery Boom Food.
Boom food delivers Pan Asian and Indian food across most of the areas in South Delhi. They have an extensive menu where they have some Korean, Japanese, Goan, Hyderabadi items along with a host of North Indian staple dishes.
We tried a melange of dishes made fresh in their kitchen and we are thoroughly impressed by the taste and quality. The Shitake mushroom bao and Japanese Tobanjan chilli Satay Kai were delicious and subtle in taste and made us look forward to their next course which was BBQ Pork ribs. They take pride in this dish and one can’t question why, after tasting one bite of this lovely dish. These ribs were absolutely tender and delicious and totally deserve to be their signature dish. To add some greens to the protein, we had Sautéed haricot beans with caramelised coconut. This added a definite crunch to the dish and complemented by adding some sweet and salty flavours. Both these dishes were as explosive as their logo.
We love our Kimchi salad whenever we are out for Chinese food but Boom Food has turned this salad on its head by making Kimchi rice. We had this with chicken redang curry. Though the sweet-sour-mildly spicy Kimchi rice feels like a complete dish on its own, this coconut milk based chicken curry enhanced the taste of the rice and stepped it up even further. We had to exercise every bit of self control to stop after a few spoons to keep space for next dish and desserts.
Indian food is definitely not their strength. We tasted their Soy chaap and Achari paneer tikka. Paneer tikka didn’t taste achari at all and was pretty ordinary. Soy chaap was much better in taste and texture, but still not something we would remember Boom Food for. Though we must say that whatever they cooked was almost devoid of mirchi. Thank heavens they do not rely on chilly powder to spruce up their dishes.
For dessert we had a slice of their cheesecake and it totally blew us away. This was one of the finest cheese cakes we have had recently. The perfect light brown top of the cake to the crusty base, every bit was melt-in-the-mouth delicious and compels us to use the clichéd term “Foodgasm” again.
It’s unfortunate that they only have home delivery option as of now. Our foodie love affair with Shahpur Jat area is just starting and we see ourselves going there on a lot of food dates. We believe they are quite capable of running a fine restaurant and hope they soon have dine in option along with their home delivery and take away.
