We don’t believe in food trails. However, of late looks like we are on a vegetarian food exploration as we end up discovering new vegetarian places in Delhi NCR by sheer chance or by recommendation or by invite. And luckily most of these places turned out to be cool discoveries. Be it Mother’s day lunch at Bell Peppers  or our recent discoveries of this fabulous vegan/vegetarian place Greenr in Shahpur Jat  or Imly  Delhi NCR is waking up to the growing demand for novel pure vegetarian dine out places.

Burma Burma has opened a pure vegetarian outlet in DLF Cyberhub – our favourite food hub in NCR. Delhi Gurgaon has very few fine dining places that cater exclusively to vegetarians. We’re sure this could be a welcome addition to many a vegetarian’s bucket lists. Though given that Burmese food is predominantly non vegetarian, it’s a surprise for us as well. Friends from Mumbai speak very highly of Burma Burma and we couldn’t resist visiting this place on a Thursday – our vegetarian day.

The Decor

The place is done tastefully mostly in brown and earthy tones. Be it the big bells hanging from the ceiling or the artwork on the walls, it all looks understated and beautiful. Even washroom looks so damn pretty and matches the decor of the restaurant. One of the best we have seen, since we started noticing washrooms.

Soups, Salads and Summer Coolers

We started with their summer coolers and soups. Their tamarind based drink “Oh No Tamarind” was the discovery of the day for us and it tops our list of most recommended items to have at Burma Burma. The sweet sour drink was sweetened with jaggery, garnished with some coconut shavings and every sip was an explosion of taste. This went well with the roasted sunflower seeds that we kept munching along with this drink. The Samuza Hincho and the Bean curd soup were nice albeit a little too spicy for us. We couldn’t help noticing the similarity between names, ingredients and taste of these soups with some Indian dishes.

Appetisers and Main course

Same was the case with salads and appetisers. They also tasted more Indian than typical Asian food. The raw mango salad was nice but we liked Tea leaves salad much better because of its crunchiness and the variety of ingredients in it.

In appetisers, Tohu Mash with Palata was an interesting combination, somewhat like our sookhi dal with condensed flaky Malabar Parotta. Spicy and delicious, one can eat it in familiar Indian style of Paratha and vegetable.

Spice Alarm” – Roasted chilly steamed buns should come pierced with a red flag on a toothpick for a Mirchi disclaimer. These were terribly hot – not for the fainthearted. It was too spicy for us to notice any flavor in it.

From the main course, Shewdagon Khowsuey was the most memorable dish. Every bite of this curry based noodle dish was full of flavor – at times even contrasting flavors that worked very well together. Another dish that looked and tasted absolutely delicious was coconut rice with peanut chutney. Served in leaf cups, this kinda looked like a South Indian dish, though tasted absolutely unique.

Desserts

We wanted to leave these flavors on our tongue for some time, but couldn’t resist trying their desserts. Burmese heart cooler was coconut milk with tapioca and a slice of sweetened bread/cake dipped partially in it. It was mild in taste and we loved the fruit bites that kept coming in every spoonful of this dessert. Durian Ice Cream can be an acquired taste and is not for everybody. Though one of us totally dig the smokey flavor of this ice cream the other one moved on to the avocado ice cream which was oh-so-smooth in texture as well as flavour.

Tea Room

If one is looking for some fancy varieties of tea, Burma Burma has an exclusive range to offer. We ended this amazing dinner with relaxing sips of their lavender tea. Burma Burma has introduced us to some unique Asian flavors that we are going to talk about for some time. Apart from the spices in some of the dishes, this Vegetarian Burmese restaurant gets a big thumbs up from us.

Recommended: Oh no tamarind /  Khowsuey
Avoidable: Roasted chilly steamed buns
