Film Screening: Turtle Walker

A quiet beach, a lone man walking thousands of kilometres, and a lifelong mission that changed how we understand sea turtles in India—Turtle Walker brings all of this together in a deeply moving documentary.
Directed by Taira Malaney, the film traces the remarkable journey of Satish Bhaskar, often called India’s “Sea Turtle Man.” In the late 1970s, he set out on an extraordinary coastal walk across the country, covering over 4000 kilometres on foot. What followed was not just an adventure, but a painstaking effort to document sea turtle nesting sites—work that would later become crucial for conservation efforts across India.
The film also reflects on the fragile relationship between nature and survival, especially in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. It raises an unsettling yet important question—what happens to sea turtles when their nesting beaches disappear?
The screening will be followed by an engaging Q&A session with the filmmaker Taira Malaney, in conversation with Shaunak Sen, making it a great pick for anyone interested in storytelling, environment, and real-life journeys that leave an impact.
