Instituto Cervantes Celebrates Inti Raymi 2026 – The Festival of the Sun
Delhi audiences will have a unique opportunity to experience one of the most significant celebrations of the Andean world as Instituto Cervantes New Delhi, in collaboration with the Embassy of Ecuador in India, presents Inti Raymi 2026 – Festival of the Sun.
Rooted in ancient Andean traditions, Inti Raymi is a ceremony of gratitude to the Sun, Mother Earth, and the natural forces that sustain life. Traditionally celebrated around the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the festival marks the harvest season and continues to be observed across Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia as a vibrant expression of indigenous culture and spiritual heritage.
The event will feature a symbolic stage ceremony beginning with the creation of the Chakana, the sacred Andean Cross that represents harmony between the physical and spiritual worlds. Audiences will also witness rituals dedicated to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth), blessings and healing practices led by a Yachac (Andean sage), and traditional performances accompanied by Andean musical instruments such as guitars and zampoñas.
Combining ritual, music, dance, and storytelling, the celebration offers visitors a glimpse into living traditions that have been passed down through generations and continue to play an important role in contemporary Andean communities.
