KNMA Presents ‘Pata Dekhabo? (Shall I Show You a Pata?)’

KNMA Presents ‘Pata Dekhabo? (Shall I Show You a Pata?)’ at the Art Passage, Saket
The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) has announced the opening of Pata Dekhabo? (Shall I Show You a Pata?), a fascinating exhibition that explores the rich storytelling traditions of scroll painting from eastern India. Hosted at the KNMA Art Passage, the skybridge connecting Nexus Select CITYWALK and DLF South Court Mall in Saket, the exhibition invites visitors to discover narratives that have travelled across generations through image, performance, and oral tradition.
Bringing together 46 reproductions from the KNMA Collection along with works sourced from institutions and public archives, the exhibition showcases pattachitras from undivided Bengal and present-day Jharkhand spanning nearly three centuries. These scroll paintings offer a unique visual language that blends mythology, folklore, social commentary, and everyday life into continuous narrative sequences.
The exhibition highlights two distinct scroll-painting traditions, revealing how artists used unfolding painted scrolls to narrate stories frame by frame, much like an early form of cinema. As visitors move through the exhibition, they are encouraged to slow down, observe the details, and follow the progression of stories as they unfold across the length of the scrolls.
By bringing these works into a contemporary public space, Pata Dekhabo? offers a rare opportunity to engage with a living storytelling tradition that continues to connect art, memory, community, and cultural heritage.
