KNMA Theatre Festival 2024: Exploring ‘The Power of Vulnerability’

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is proud to announce its inaugural KNMA Theatre Festival, a groundbreaking event from its Performing Arts department. Set against the scenic backdrop of Sunder Nursery, New Delhi’s historic heritage park, the festival will take place from October 14-20, 2024. This marks KNMA’s first foray into the contemporary theatre scene, with an ambitious lineup of performances, workshops, and discussions.

Curated by renowned Bengaluru-based actor, director, and filmmaker Kirtana Kumar, the festival’s theme, ‘The Power of Vulnerability,’ will spotlight contemporary theatre’s role in addressing key societal issues such as class, religion, gender, sexuality, and location. Audiences will be invited to explore how vulnerability can inspire connection and transformation in the post-pandemic world.

The festival opens on October 14 with a riveting performance of Beesu Kamsale, a traditional Kannada folk form that involves ritualistic acrobatics. This performance is led by Sri M. Lingaiah and presented by the Karnataka Janapada Kamsale Kalavidara Sangha from Bengaluru.

Other festival highlights include:

  • The Nights (October 14) – A puppet theatre reimagining of One Thousand and One Nights directed by Anurupa Roy and presented by Katkatha Puppet Arts Trust.
  • Love and Information (October 16) – A contemporary play exploring modern relationships.
  • Bhaagi Hui Ladkiyan (October 19) – A performance delving into women’s narratives of escape and rebellion.
  • wepushthesky (October 20) – A closing act that blurs boundaries between performance art and contemporary theatre.

In total, 13 plays will be staged over six days, with performances in English, Hindi, and regional Indian languages, showcasing a diverse array of theatrical styles.

In addition to performances, the festival will include:

  • Workshops: Led by acclaimed experts Dr. Barbara Lutz and Dr. Christoph Scheurle, offering practical insights for theatre-makers and students.
  • Symposium: A thematic discussion on ‘The Power of Vulnerability,’ exploring the post-pandemic state of Indian theatre, with interactive sessions, Q&A, and focus group discussions.
