Navratna: Indigenous Masters – A Tribal and Traditional Art Exhibition

October 18 @ 11:00 AM - December 27 @ 8:00 PM

Discover the richness of India’s traditional and indigenous art at Navratna: Indigenous Masters, the inaugural exhibition at Treasure of India, a new gallery and foundation in Gurugram dedicated to traditional, tribal and indigenous art. Curated by art historian and author Uma Nair, the exhibition runs from 18 October to 27 December 2026.

True to its name, Navratna brings together nine master artisans, celebrating the artistic traditions they represent. The exhibition spans a remarkable range of practices, from 4,000-year-old lost-wax metal casting to the intricate details of Pattachitra, Pichwai and miniature painting.

The participating artists include National Award-winning Dokra artisans Baldev Waghmare and Hirabai Jhureka Baghel, Gond master artist Nankusia Shyam, Sohrai artist Putli Ganju, Pattachitra artists Niranjan Maharana and Akshay Kumar Bariki, Kalighat artist Putul Chitrakar, and master artisans Leelakant Pareek and Sudarshan Pareek, known for Pichwai and miniature painting.

The exhibition also marks the launch of Treasure of India’s broader vision to support traditional artists. Founded by artist Tanisha Bakshi, the gallery builds on a 45-year legacy of collecting begun by her father, artist and collector Ashok Samrat Bakshi.

Alongside the gallery, the non-profit Treasure of India Art Foundation aims to provide residencies, skill-building workshops and direct support to help traditional artisans develop independent practices and reach wider audiences.

For anyone interested in Indian folk art, indigenous traditions and the craftsmanship passed down through generations, Navratna: Indigenous Masters offers an opportunity to explore the diversity of India’s artistic heritage.
