Tyeb Mehta: Bearing Weight

The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) presents Tyeb Mehta: Bearing Weight (With the Lightness of Being), a landmark exhibition celebrating the birth centenary of Tyeb Mehta, one of India’s most influential modern artists. Presented in collaboration with the Tyeb Mehta Foundation and Saffronart Foundation, and curated by Roobina Karode, the exhibition marks the first-ever comprehensive retrospective of the artist.

Following a prelude at ART MUMBAI 2025, the exhibition expands at KNMA, New Delhi, into a full-scale exploration of Tyeb Mehta’s life and artistic practice. Featuring over 120 works, the exhibition spans paintings, drawings, sculptures, film, and rare archival material, many of which have seldom been exhibited.

The retrospective brings together some of Mehta’s most iconic series, including Falling Figure, Falling Bird, Bull, Diagonal, Kali, and Mahishasura, reflecting his response to conflict, myth, and the human condition in post-independent India. The exhibition also presents Mehta’s short film Koodal, a powerful meditation on life, death, and symbolic roles of humans, animals, and deities.

Enriching the narrative are rare archival materials such as early studies, notebooks, photographs, and historic exhibition documents, offering fresh insights into Mehta’s creative process and legacy.
