Stand-up comedy; let’s admit it is a thing of the west. When this genre started in India, it seemed a little wannabe. Over time we realised that this form of entertainment is going strong and what with AIB and hit the headlines. Stand-up acts feature among the popular things to do on weekend in Delhi Gurgaon. So much so that recently international comedians Colin and Brad performed to a full house at Club Patio in Gurgaon

In fact, Gurgaon seems to be a hot spot for such shows. The Ghanta Awards Nomination featuring renowned stand-up comedians Radhika Vaz, Neeti Palta, Sanjay Rajoura and Manan Desai was held at Epicentre, Gurgaon. The Ghanta Awards were a nomination special for the worst of Bollywood in various categories.

The programme started about half an hour late and the audience was rather impatient at the beginning of the show. The introductory act by Neeti Palta diffused the atmosphere and people were in splits in no time. Palta’s act was followed by the other stand up comics each covering various categories such as
the worst film, actor, actress, director, debut etc.

We could so relate to the content since many a times we have bitten our fingers for wasting hard earned money on Bollywood crap such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. We hear Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has won the Ghanta Award for the worst film of the year.

Among the comedians, Palta and Vaz stuck to English, Desai spoke English peppered Hindi while Rajoura, wearing his Haryanvi roots on the sleeve, spoke in Haryanvi accented Hindi.

While all the comedians were good, and it may not be fair to pass a judgement, we must mention that the closing act by Radhika Vaz reinstated out believe in this genre of entertainment. She was a natural and while some of the content was explicit, given her presentation not for a moment did we feel queasy.

Our recommendation: If you haven’t tried stand-up comedy be it the Ghanta Awards Nomination, or any other act, do give popular comedians shot.

Kishore Dayani through his comedy club Laughter Nation has been holding standup comedy shows across Delhi NCR. We have liked the acts for their simplicity, sincerity and the instant connect with Delhi audience. He recently showcased comedian Apurrv Gupta at Lok Kala Manch. Appurv is an engineer who’s taken up standup comedy and entertained the audience for about an hour or so…
