GAJA-LOK: Elephant Lands and Their Cultural Symbolism in India

Some places preserve history in books and monuments. Others continue to live and breathe through traditions, stories, and shared memory. GAJA-LOK explores one such living legacy – India’s timeless cultural relationship with the elephant.
Presented by INTACH in collaboration with India International Centre (IIC), the exhibition takes visitors through the many ways elephants have shaped India’s mythology, heritage, faith, art, and collective imagination over centuries. More than just an exhibition, GAJA-LOK reflects on coexistence, symbolism, and the enduring presence of elephants within India’s cultural landscape.
Curated by the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Division of INTACH, the showcase brings together visual narratives and historical perspectives that connect nature, spirituality, memory, and living traditions. Through this journey, visitors are invited to look at elephants not only as majestic animals, but as deeply embedded cultural symbols across regions and generations.
For anyone interested in heritage, mythology, conservation, and India’s layered cultural history, this promises to be a thoughtful and immersive experience in the heart of Delhi.
