After a long and harsh winter, we can finally call it spring in Delhi. Spring is celebrated all over India in various ways. Some celebrate it as Vasant Panchmi in the North and some celebrate it like Saraswati Puja in West Bengal.  Which is the best place to celebrate spring? A garden of course! The Garden Festival or the Garden Tourism Festival, a joint project of Delhi Government and Delhi Tourism, is an annual flower show that is held at the Garden of Five Senses, Saket. The first Garden Festival was held in the year 2004 and has mostly been a weekend event since then. The festival draws a motley crowd comprising horticulturalists, gardening enthusiasts as well as the fun-loving crowd of Delhi-NCR.

Garden Tourism Festival, 2021

The 34th Garden Tourism Festival, 2021 is on in full bloom since last week. The annual event is different from the flower show during other years. The Garden Tourism Festival is normally a 3-day weekend affair. But this time, perhaps to break the monotony brought about by the corona pandemic, the Garden Tourism Festival has been extended.

The natural bonanza is on for 3 whole weeks so that people, mostly restricted to homes in the last one year, can come out and enjoy a day in the open, out in the sun, amidst flowers, nature and the beautiful setting of the Garden of Five Senses.

Garden Tourism Festival – what to do

A visitor is welcomed with a host of floral installations that make great photo spots. Thereafter, you can check out approximately 50000 varieties of flowers, shrubs, and bonsai on display during the festival. A special display of artwork created from scrap material also evokes a lot of interest. You can also watch live cultural performances at the stage area inside the premises. Gardening and horticulture workshops are also part of the program. Many food stalls have also been set up to satiate the taste buds of visitors. In fact, you can carry your own picnic basket and have your own alfresco dining experience in the garden.

An annual Garden Bazaar has been set up as part of the festival. Situated in a special tent adjacent to the ticket counter, the stalls here are selling saplings, plants, and seeds for flowers, fruits, or indoor foliage. Some stalls selling artistic flower pots and we found a stall that was selling plants and pots meant to evoke peace and serenity. Organic products, herbs, and green tea are also available here. We could see that gardening enthusiasts are having a gala time at the bazaar.

Garden Tourism Festival, 2021 dates, timings, and tickets

The 34th Garden Tourism Festival, 2021 is taking place from 19th February to 13th March 2021 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and 11 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. during weekends. The ticket prices are Rs. 40 per person during the week and Rs. 50 per person during weekends. Children below 12 years are allowed free entry. There is an additional charge of Rs. 60 for bringing in a camera or a shooting device inside the festival. Tickets are available online as well as at the ticket window at Garden of Five Senses.

Have you been to the Garden of Five Senses? If not, this could be a great opportunity. The Garden of Five Senses is like the lungs of a thoroughly urbanized South Delhi. Among all the city concrete, when we took the narrow lane beside Saket Metro Station to reach the garden, we could not fathom what could await us. But once we reached the Garden of Five Senses, we were transported to another world. Various known and unknown shrubs, trees, and creepers surrounded us in a beautiful open space of approximately 20 acres.

The flora is interspersed with many earthy structures and simplistic works of art that make this place a sculpture park as well. Don’t miss the array of little girl statues in prayer posture. Called the “Prayer for Peace”, these figures evoke a sense of serenity. A replica of the Mexican Mayan Labná Arc creates an interesting gazebo amongst the green. But we like best the array of red sandstone elephants standing against the walls. These somewhat depict the beautiful interplay of art and nature here.

Why it is called Garden of Five Senses?

What are the five senses? These are sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. The Garden of Five Senses has been built to awaken all the five senses with which humans perceive life. The natural beauty juxtaposed with aesthetic architecture and artwork is created to appeal to all our senses and enhance their pleasure.

How do you get to the Garden of Five Senses?

The Garden of Five Senses is approximately 2.5 km from Saket Metro Station on the Yellow Line. On a good day, you can walk it, or you can take an autorickshaw or a battery-operated rickshaw from here. Incidentally, a free shuttle service is being operated between Saket Metro Station to facilitate visitors to the Garden Tourism Festival, 2021.

If you are driving, there is ample parking space adjacent to the garden, so that is a good option. Alternatively, you can take a cab and this location is correctly featured on most online navigation maps.

Tips

When we visited the Garden Tourism Festival, we could see that visitors were out in full swing as some sort of protest to the coronavirus situation. Garden of Five Senses is a huge open space so that diminishes the risk of infection. Moreover, given the expanse of the venue, it is possible to maintain physical distancing. If you want a day out, be part of the joie-de-vivre but with a mask covering your nose and face.

Also, since this is essentially a flower show, do visit in daylight. Try to stay till evening since the fairy lights on the trees transform the Garden Festival area into a dreamland.

The festival shall remain open for the public from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekdays and from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm on weekends.
